NEWFANE – The doors and windows of the First Baptist Church on East Avenue were damaged over the weekend in an apparent break-in attempt, but the only thing missing appeared to be a can of fruit.

The church manager told Niagara County deputies Sunday morning that a food pantry, located in the basement of the church at 6047 East Ave., had damage to the door and door knob. Patrol checking the perimeter found a screen was ripped off and a basement window was tampered with to gain entry.

A church helper told deputies that she had stopped in at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday to drop off some bread and found the doors open, but thought the last person there was responsible.

The manager told deputies that nothing appeared to be missing from the church or pantry, except for a can of fruit that appeared to have been consumed in the building, with a suspect leaving behind an empty can.

Damage was listed at $125.
