200 YEARS AGO – “The Black Experience in the War of 1812” is the topic as teacher and African-American historian Eva M. Doyle speaks in the War of 1812 lecture series at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Buffalo History Museum, 1 Museum Court, Nottingham Terrace and Elmwood Avenue. The series is co-sponsored by the Black Rock-Riverside Good Neighbors Planning Alliance Historical Preservation Committee. MIND GAMES – Quizmaster Dennis George returns Saturday evening to lead the third annual Penn Dixie “Think Ya Know” Trivia/Game Show Fundraising Event. It takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. in Oakwood Manor in Hamburg Post 1419, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2985 Lake View Road, Hamburg. Doors open at 6.

The Quizmaster will pose trivia questions table to table and preside over a special trivia game with prizes that include local vacation getaways, a $150 gift card to Seneca Niagara Casino and a 32-inch flat-screen TV.

THE GOOD FIGHT – Committed to finding a cure for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is Dr. Terry Stephan Hains of Hamburg. Her husband, Jack, succumbed to a genetic form of ALS in 2010. Her sister-in-law is battling the disease. And her children, nieces and nephews all are at risk.

To help raise funds for ALS research, she is hosting an “Imagine a Cure” cocktail party and local artist auction at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Silverthorne Mansion, 877 Delaware Ave. Donation is $50. WINTER WONDERS – Griffis Sculpture Park outside the Cattaraugus County hamlet of Ashford Hollow will host its third annual Moonlight Snowshoe Tour from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. For the first time, the sculptures will be illuminated during the tour.

Cost is $50 and includes snowshoes from the City Garage Ski Shop in Ellicottville, live music by the band Smackdab and chili from Balloons Restaurant and Nightclub in Ellicottville.
