If the seeds hold true, fans from Jamestown and Olean should have plenty to celebrate two weeks from now.
Both boys and girls teams from those Southern Tier towns earned the No. 1 seeds during Selection Saturday as the pairings were released for the upcoming Section VI Basketball Tournaments.
“It’s something we’re very proud of,” said Jamestown Athletic Director and boys coach Ben Drake. “We work together a lot, share the gym, see now how often the other is in the gym working to get better.”
The Red Raiders have won their last six and are led by 1,000-point scorer Tommy Campion, the team’s only senior. A sectional title would be their third in four years.
The Jamestown boys bring a 16-2 record into the Class AA bracket while Olean’s boys are 17-1 in Class B-1 in what will be the 62nd annual postseason tournament for boys.
Jamestown and Olean’s girls are 15-3 as the girls welcome their 38th annual event.
Quick hitters: The Silver Creek boys (18-0) and the Chautauqua Lake (17-0) girls are the only undefeated teams in either bracket.
• East Aurora won a coin flip with Maryvale for the No. 3 seed in Class B-1, avoiding a possible second-round matchup with No. 1 seed Olean.
• The boys and girls tournaments will be using three-man officiating crews for the finals, as well as the semifinals, this year .
• The tournament tips off on Tuesday with five first-round boys games among Class B teams and eight first-round girls games, also in Class B.
Top seeds: Boys: Jamestown (Class AA), Sweet Home (Class A-1), Amherst (Class A-2), Olean (Class B-1), CSAT (Class B-2), Middle Early College (Class C-1), Silver Creek (Class C-2) and Brocton (Class D).
Girls: Jamestown (Class AA), Hamburg (Class A-1), Iroquois (Class A-2), Olean (Class B-1), Wilson (Class B-2), Holland (Class C-1), Frewsburg (Class C-2) and Clymer (Class D).
Finals fans: Buffalo State will host the boys finals and semifinals in Classes AA, A and B. Classes C and D will play their last two rounds at Jamestown Community College.
The girls finals in Classes AA, A and B will return to Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, while Jamestown High School will host the Class C and D finals.
Get your tickets: Ticket prices for the boys and girls games are unchanged from last year. The prequarterfinals and quarterfinals are $3 at the door the presale tickets are $2. The semifinals and finals are $5. The finals, crossover finals and Far West Regionals are $6.
Defending champions: Boys: Niagara Falls (Class AA), McKinley (Class A-1), East Aurora (Class A-2), Olean (Class B-1), CSAT (Class B-2), OTC Middle College (Class C-1), Silver Creek (Class C-2) and Panama (Class D).
Girls: Lockport (Class AA), Grand Island (Class A-1), Pioneer (Class A-2), Olean (Class B-1), Southwestern (Class B-2), Salamanca (Class C-1), Randolph (Class C-2) and Clymer (Class D).
Opting out: Eleven girls teams opted out of the open tournament, leaving a field of 75 teams to battle it out for titles in eight classifications.
Opting not to participate were six of the 13 teams in the Buffalo Public Schools’ Canisius Cup, plus two more, Bennett and East High, were ruled ineligible for not fulfilling the paperwork/website requirements.
Also calling it a season were Cattaraugus/Little Valley, Falconer, Maritime Charter, Westfield and West Seneca West.
For the boys, only Falconer and Cattaraugus/Little Valley will not be participating among the field of 93 teams.
