A North Tonawanda man was arrested Friday after he fired a handgun through his kitchen window into a neighbor’s house, police said.

Michael Stafford, 64 of Fairmont Street, told authorities he did not know his handgun was loaded when he was playing with the weapon, North Tonawanda police said. Charged with reckless endangerment, Stafford was arraigned in North Tonawanda City Court and released on $500 bail.

About 12:30 p.m., a woman reported that “something went through her wall and into her dining room,” Police Chief Randy Szukala said. “It turned out it was a bullet of some kind and the only place it could have come from was the neighbor’s house directly to the west.”

Shortly after the shooting, police attempted to make contact with anyone in the house from where the gunshot originated but did not get a response. Neighbors were told to stay put and stay away from the windows.

At about 1 p.m., Stafford was taken into custody, police said.
