Donald J. MacKinnon, of the Town of Tonawanda, a retired account manager for Occidental Petroleum, died Wednesday in the Rosa Coplon Home at Weinberg Campus, Getzville. He was 88.
Born in Dunkirk, he was a graduate of McKinley High School.
During World War II, he served in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division and fought in the mountains of Italy and Germany, for which he was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
After his military service, Mr. MacKinnon graduated from Canisius College, where he played on the football and baseball teams.
In 2010, he and the rest of the members of the 1948 football team were inducted into the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. MacKinnon was an active parishioner of St. Timothy Catholic Church, Town of Tonawanda, and served in its various organizations, particularly the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
His wife of 59 years, Florence Buckley MacKinnon, died in 2007.
He is survived by a son, Dale; two brothers, Robert and James; and a sister, Patricia Sandor.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Timothy Catholic Church.
