Former Seneca Nation president Robert Odawi Porter has taken a new job as senior counsel with a prominent Washington, D.C., law firm.

Porter, a Harvard University Law School graduate who completed his two-year term as Seneca president in November, has joined SNR Denton, the law firm announced Wednesday.

Porter will join the firm’s Native American Law and Policy practice.

“As a former tribal leader and tribal lawyer, I have fought my whole career for tribal sovereignty and treaty rights, and [I] look forward to offering a unique new dimension to the firm’s Indian law practice,” Porter said in a statement released by the firm.

After a hard-fought election campaign for the position of Seneca Nation treasurer, Porter was defeated by his brother-in-law, Rodney Pierce, last Nov. 6.

Seneca Nation laws prevent anyone from serving two consecutive terms as president.
