A kitchen fire in a duplex on Wehrle Drive in Amherst Wednesday night caused $70,000 in damages to two apartments, the Main-Transit Fire Department reported.

Volunteer firefighters responded to the call at about 11 p.m. and found the fire in the kitchen of the west apartment at 2478 Wehrle Drive. Firefighters were told that all residents were out of the building, and the blaze was quickly extinguished and smoke was removed from the building.

Fire Chief James Lawida estimated damage to the building at $40,000 and damage to west apartment at $25,000 and damage to the east apartment at $5,000. Two cats were rescued. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
