Pay teachers well to attract the best

A recent writer blames the decline of public schools on the removal of God. No one stops children from praying at school or anyplace. Our Constitution, however, forbids turning the school into a church annex.

No, the real reason schools have declined is because 50 years ago, brilliant women were unable to find career employment outside of being a teacher, secretary, waitress or clerk.

Today, brilliant women are able to pick from many well-paid occupations. Elementary schools, the base for success in education, are woefully lacking in these creative instructors and principals. Unless we make teachers’ salaries competitive, schools will continue to be a warehousing operation until the children are old enough to get a job.
