State police investigating the death of woman struck by a truck while walking along the Thruway Tuesday night in Lancaster said the woman is believed to have been involved in a one-car accident and walked away from the scene a little less than an hour and a half earlier.

The first accident was reported at about 6:40 p.m. on the eastbound side of the Thruway in Lancaster. By the time troopers arrived, the driver had left. The driver was believed to have walked toward a side road in Lancaster.

Then at 8:06 p.m., a 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by a 43-year-old Quebec man that was in the right-hand lane of the eastbound side of the Thruway struck and killed a woman who had walked into the lane.

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured. No tickets were issued.

The accident forced the closure of the eastbound side of the Thruway until 1:20 a.m.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the victim pending notification of family.

Investigators also were asking anyone who may have information or witnessed something in connection to the case to contact state police in Clarence at 759-6831 or state police in Buffalo at 935-6570.
