A Buffalo man has been charged Wednesday with setting a fire that caused more than $12,000 damage to a two-unit apartment house on Kamper Avenue nearly a month ago, police in the city reported.

Jay Speelberg, 35, of Abbott Road, was arrested shortly after noon by Officers Mark Slawek and Denise Casey in the first block of Elmwood Avenue. He was with charged with fourth-degree arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, police said.

Speelberg is accused of starting a fire in a second-floor apartment kitchen about 9:35 p.m. Jan. 19, police said. No motive for the incident was disclosed in police documents, which accused Speelberg of creating “a grave risk of death to tenants and firefighters.”
