Florence Catherine “Peg” Gerken helped deliver countless babies during a nursing career that spanned more than two decades. But she put that all aside to raise five children in between her stints as a nurse.

Mrs. Gerken died Sunday of a heart attack in Our Lady of Victory Home, Lackawanna. She was 92.

Born Florence Burfield on Buffalo’s East Side, she graduated from East High School and Mercy Hospital Nursing School.

She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital before meeting her future husband, Joe Gerken, shortly before the start of World War II. The couple courted for four years while Mr. Gerken served in the Army.

They married in 1947 and moved to Hamburg, where Mrs. Gerken devoted the next 20 years of her life to raising her five children. She then returned to the nursing world, serving for 16 years as a registered nurse in the “preemie” ward at Our Lady of Victory Hospital.

She was a devout New York Yankees fan and loved to garden, complete crossword puzzles and spend time with her grandchildren, her son Joseph said.

Her husband of 50 years is deceased.

In addition to her son Joseph, she and is survived by two other sons, John Patrick and Thomas, and a daughter Mary Burr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 5930 S. Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
