The federal government is sitting on nearly $7 billion in harbor maintenance funds that should be used right away for dredging federal ports and harbors, including the Buffalo River and ship canal, Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday.

Schumer said he will push for the newly introduced Harbor Maintenance Act of 2013, which would provide money from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund to the U.S. Army Corps f of Engineers for dredging projects all across the Great Lakes.
