A 20-year-old woman was listed as stable but critically ill after being stabbed late Sunday morning at a Niagara Falls, Ont., hotel, Niagara Regional Police reported.

The unidentified woman underwent surgery at Greater Niagara General Hospital.

Peter J. Ashford, 20, of St. Catharines, was charged in the case with one count of attempted murder, police said. He was being held by police pending a bail hearing.

Police said it didn’t appear that the victim and suspect knew each other, but that their meeting was prearranged.
