A Collins man was arrested and accused of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest after he was stopped following a hit-and-run accident early Saturday, Erie County Sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies were alerted to a hit-and-run accident in which a car rear-ended a second vehicle on Southwestern Boulevard on the Seneca Nation Reservation.

The suspect’s vehicle was located a short time later on Versailles Plank Road with the help of Seneca Nation Marshals.

Deputies interviewed the driver, John L. Darwin, 50, and found him to be intoxicated. Darwin was “uncooperative and struggled with deputies” as he was arrested. He was eventually taken into custody and charged with DWI. He refused a chemical test.

Authorities learned he also had an active arrest warrant out of the Town of Collins by State Police on a charge of criminal mischief.

Darwin was taken to the Erie County Holding Center where he was being held pending arraignment.
