Elaine Helen Orzechowski, a retired teacher, died Jan. 27 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 72.

Born in Buffalo, Ms. Orzechowski attended St. Louis School and Mount St. Mary Academy. She earned a degree in elementary education from D’Youville College.

Seeking adventure, she took a teaching job in Sitka, Alaska, and was there during the 1964 earthquake.

She later taught first and second grade in New Mexico, Florida and West Virginia before returning to Western New York in the 1980s to help care for elderly family members.

vvLocally, she taught in Elba and Buffalo.

A resident of the Weinberg Campus in Getzville, she enjoyed music and reading. She played piano and organ and served as a church organist in Sitka.

Survivors include nieces, a nephew and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the old church at St. Mary Catholic Church, 6919 Transit Road, Swormville.
