Buffalo Junior Sabres forward Ryan Schmelzer, an East Amherst resident, has been named Ontario Junior Hockey League Player of the Month for January.

Schmelzer (Williamsville East) recorded a West Division-leading eight goals and tied for third in conference scoring during the month with 17 points.

Schmelzer, who ranks ninth in the league in points with 61 and has scored 24 goals, is the third Junior Sabres player to receive a monthly honor from the OJHL. League-leading scorer Tyler Gjurich was honored as player of the month in November, while goalie Parker Gahagen (Williamsville North) received goalie of the month honors, also in November.
