The West Seneca Town Board on Monday unanimously approved the hiring a new part-time director of recreation as part of a restructuring effort in the town’s recreation, senior and youth services departments.

Craig Kroll, a former athletic director with the Boys & Girls Club of East Aurora, will assume the duties effective today at a rate of $20 per hour. The hiring of a part-time director of recreation follows a two-year experiment that had consolidated the departments under Mary E. Josefiak. She has returned to her duties at the West Seneca Senior Citizens Center as a full-time senior recreation therapist.

“We worked very hard trying to do this above board,” said Councilman Eugene P. Hart. “Many times when you’re in this kind of business that we’re in, you’re accused of politics. This appointment has no politics in it, whatsoever.”

Supervisor Sheila M. Meegan said there were 20 applicants for the job and nine were interviewed by the three-member Town Board.

“We went through a very arduous screening process for each of the candidates that we thought were the best out of the 20,” said Hart.

“We spent a day interviewing these individuals. At the end of the day, Mr. Kroll was the best candidate, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Kroll, who attended the board’s regular business meeting Monday, was invited to address those assembled.

“I hope to build a recreation program that the community can be proud to be part of,” Kroll said.

Board members praised his five years’ experience with the Boys & Girls Club.

“His experience wasn’t just with the Boys Club, it was a very extensive resume. The Boys & Girls Club was probably the clincher for me. Coming in with that experience is so important. It’s a much more complicated job than people think,” said Hart.

Kroll’s job will be to “direct, supervise, develop, organize, promote and coordinate the operations of the Town of West Seneca’s Recreation Department,” which include baseball, basketball and hockey programs for youth, among numerous other activities.
