July 2, 1937 – Jan. 28, 2013
Geraldine Valone, a former Canisius College employee who helped coordinate the annual Wehle School of Business awards dinners, died Monday in Oakwood Skilled Nursing Facility in Amherst after a long illness.
She was 75.
The former Geraldine Guzik was raised in Sharon, Pa., and attended Penn State University, where she graduated first in her class with a degree in home economics. “Gerry” then spent a year in residency at the University of Oklahoma to become a certified dietitian.
She married James S. Valone in 1959 and worked as a dietitian at the University of Michigan, where her husband was completing his doctorate. The couple moved to Buffalo in 1961 when Mr. Valone took a teaching position at Canisius College.
Mrs. Valone spent the 1960s and 1970s raising her four sons. After her children were grown, Mrs. Valone worked at Canisius in various secretarial positions. In particular, she helped coordinate the annual Wehle School of Business awards dinner throughout the 1990s. She also coordinated testing for various certification exams at the college.
In her later years, Mrs. Valone was troubled by a debilitating nerve condition that limited her mobility. But in periods of better health, she was able to travel with her family to Hawaii, California and Florida, where she enjoyed time with her grandchildren. One of her greatest loves was tending to her lawn, garden and those who needed help.
She was a member of Christ the King Church in Snyder for more than 50 years. She also was a supporter of many charitable causes. Besides her husband of more than 50 years, a longtime history professor and associate dean at Canisius, Mrs. Valone is survived by four sons, Stephen, Thomas, David and Robert; a sister, Dorothy; and three brothers, Edward, Robert and Michael Guzik.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Drive at Main Street in Snyder. Prayers will be offered at 9 a.m. at the Dietrich Funeral Home, 2480 Kensington Ave., Amherst.
