Sept. 6, 1939 – Jan. 26, 2013

John R. Russ, president of Buffalo Abrasives in North Tonawanda, died Saturday surrounded by family in his Clarence home after a lengthy illness. He was 73.

Mr. Russ started the company 25 years ago in partnership with his cousins, Jeffery Binkley, Arthur Russ and John L. Russ. Previously, he was sales manager at National Grinding Wheel for 30 years, a company his grandfather founded in the 1920s.

Mr. Russ enjoyed his work and retired only six days before he died.

The Niagara Falls native graduated from Nichols School in 1957 and attended both Brown and Syracuse universities.

Mr. Russ, an avid golfer, proudly recorded a hole-in-one during his playing days.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan B.; two sons, John and Daniel; a daughter, Kristin E. Bou Zeidan; and a sister, Karen A. Omel.

A private memorial will be held in April.
