GASPORT – A passerby alerted police when a cash register was found on the pavement at Rochester and Bolton roads Monday night.

Middleport Police discovered a window had been smashed across the street at the Sunrise Cafe. Officers, assisted by Niagara County sheriff’s deputies, searched the restaurant at 10:55 p.m. and found the Rochester Road restaurant was vacant, but someone had ripped the cash register from the counter.

Restaurant owner Renee L. Tetrault told deputies she and her husband left the restaurant at 9:30 p.m.; the suspect had apparently been unable to open the register, which was found unopened and still contained $100 in cash, deputies said. Damage to the restaurant was listed at $400.
