WELLAND, Ont. – The body of a woman was recovered Wednesday morning from a recreational canal on the west side of Highway 406 near the Welland Bridge, Niagara Regional Police reported.

Investigators say they believe the woman was the driver involved in a one-vehicle crash about 6:05 a.m. on northbound Highway 406 near the north end of the Welland Bridge.

The body was spotted about 7:40 a.m., and recovered by police and Welland fire and Emergency Medical Services crews.

Officers could not immediately determine how the woman ended up in the canal. Anyone with information should call Detective Constable Jay McNight at (905) 688-4111, Ext. 3335.
