JAMESTOWN – A Jamestown man surrendered to city police early Tuesday afternoon after learning that he had been identified through a store surveillance system as the man who grabbed an undetermined amount of cash out of the cash register at the 7-Eleven store at Main and Sixth streets in the early morning hours, Police Capt. Robert Samuelson said.

Carl E. Mitchell, 56, was being held at the Chautauqua County Jail on a third-degree robbery charge. Samuelson said Mitchell is accused of approaching the counter at the store at about 1:48 a.m., reached over and forcibly took an undetermined amount of cash from the cash draw when the clerk opened it.

Officers were able to identify Mitchell through store surveillance cameras and sent out word to the community that an arrest warrant had been obtained. Mitchell surrendered and was arraigned and jailed pending further court proceedings.
