A Rochester man pleaded guilty Monday to selling counterfeit Christmas ornaments at the Walden Galleria.

Hakan Umsu, 32, admitted buying the fake ornaments from a company in China, but his lawyer told U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara that he thought they were genuine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Fauzia K. Mattingly told Arcara the counterfeit ornaments were made to look like ornaments sold by a Sarasota, Fla. company and that Umsu was caught in December of 2011 selling them from a kiosk at the Galleria.

Umsu pleaded guilty to a single charge of copyright infringement and now faces up to six months in prison.

His lawyer, Glenn Pincus, told Arcara that the copyrighted and non-copyrighted ornaments are made by the same Chinese manufacturer and that Umsu was unaware that he was buying fake ornaments.
