The celebration of Catholic Schools Week at St. John the Baptist School in the Town of Tonawanda will feature a donation by students to a scholarship fund.

Principal Cynthia Jacobs will accept the check for the Angels Wings Scholarship fund, which is committed to tuition assistance, during an event scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and school campus, 1085 Englewood Ave.

The school’s student council is a key supporter for the scholarship fund. It sponsors several fundraisers annually to raise money for scholarships.

Each year, approximately 20 families – or more than 10 percent of the school’s population, receive tuition assistance from Angels Wings and other scholarship funds, according to Linda Garrity, media director.

This year’s national theme for Catholic Schools Week is “Raise the Standards.”

“It’s particularly endearing to witness our students caring enough to help families within the St. John’s school community,” Michelle Salemi, director of advancement, said in a statement. “Truly, we are living the theme of ‘raising the standards' on every level. ... This gift to Angel Wings provides tangible evidence of our students’ spirit in action.”
