A man was shot in the chest as he opened the door at 607 Elmwood Ave. in Niagara Falls just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, city police reported.

The shooter shot the victim in the doorway and fled.

“There were other people in the house, but the shooter didn’t come in the house,” said Capt. William M. Thomson, chief of detectives. “He just shot him and left.”

Police who arrived at the scene found the victim with a small entry hole wound in the left chest area, Thomson said.

He said the 28-year-old man, whom he did not identify, was taken to Erie County Medical Center with a serious wound that required surgery.

Investigators believe the shooting was drug-related, Thomson said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Niagara Falls Police detective bureau at 286-4553.
