The John R. Oishei Foundation has awarded a $225,000 grant to the Food Bank of WNY’s Direct Delivery Program.
The money will be payable over a three-year span and will make it possible for the Food Bank to deliver food from its warehouse at 91 Holt St. to its 225 charitable food-providing member agencies throughout Erie County.
Prior to the Direct Delivery Program, many of the agencies had to pick up the food at the Food Bank’s warehouse and transport it back to their locations. Others relied on AmeriCorps, but due to the restructuring of its community outreach, the AmeriCorps program became unavailable at the end of last year.
The Food Bank will use refrigerated trucks equipped with a GPS software-based routing system that will target delivery times to within 15 to 20 minutes. That will give agencies time to arrange volunteers to be on hand to help unload trucks.
