Second Amendment is not about hunting

This letter is in response to the letter, “America should treat guns the same as cars,” in the Jan. 13 paper.

Her letter is illustrative of the failure of our school system to provide basic education. Her comparison of cars to guns is invalid because our Constitution, the basic law of the land, enumerates our right to keep and bear arms. If she understood the foundations of our country, she would know that this right is not granted by the government, rather it is a God-given right that the government has no right to take away. This has been confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court as recently as 2010.

The Second Amendment is not about hunting or target shooting. It was written so that free people could protect themselves from tyranny. Tyranny of all sorts, including the tyranny of a crazy person shooting up a school or theater.
