A truck driver from Pennsylvania was killed early Thursday when he crashed into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer on Interstate 86 in the town of Mina, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s officials said.

The victim has been identified as Milton F. Pertl, 63, of Girard, Pa.

Freezing rain had covered the road with ice when at about 3 a.m. a tractor trailer, driven by Theon Nelson, 48, of Elyria, Ohio, stopped in the driving lane of eastbound I-86 because of a jack-knifed vehicle in front of him.

Investigators said Pertl’s box truck, which witnesses said was going too fast for the conditions, drove into the back of Nelson’s truck.

Pertl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound side of I-86 was closed until 8 a.m. because of the accident.

The Sherman and Findley Lake fire departments assisted at the scene.

No charges were filed against Nelson.
