The City of Batavia Fire Department on Thursday was awarded $60,367 in federal funding to train new firefighters and upgrade the equipment used by its first responders, announced Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

Fire Chief Jim Maxwell said the money, from the Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program in the Department of Homeland Security, will help train new recruits to replace several retired workers, as well as some expected to retire this year.

The money also will provide training to increase the department’s capabilities to deal with extrications and with technical rescue incidents, Maxwell explained.
