NOT SO LONG AGO – A visiting professor from Poland will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Polish Arts Club of Buffalo at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Harlem Road Community Center, 4255 Harlem Road, Snyder.

Anna Mazurkiewicz, a historian and assistant professor at the University of Gdansk, will speak on the Assembly of Captive European Nations, a CIA-sponsored Cold War-era organization of exiles, including former prime ministers, party leaders and diplomats, from countries dominated by the Soviet Union.

Mazurkiewicz, who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Gdansk in 2006 and won a national award for her doctoral dissertation, currently is writing a book about the organization. During the current academic year, she holds a Kosciuszko Foundation teaching fellowship at the University at Buffalo.

Her talk is open to the public. Refreshments will follow. A $5 donation is requested from nonmembers.

TASTE TEST – Chili fans will congregate in the West End Hotel, 340 Union St., Hamburg, from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday for the fourth annual Chili Cook-off sponsored by Ten Lives Club cat rescue and adoption group. Cash prizes will be given for the three best entries, as determined by the fans, along with prizes for best display and most-original decor. All entrants will get to choose a prize.

There is no charge to enter, but the entry deadline is Wednesday. To receive an application by email, call the group at 646-5577. Or you can download one from www.tenlivesclub.com. To be part of the judging and enjoy the chili samples and bread, the cost is $7.50, $5 for kids 10 and under. There will be a cash bar and a theme basket raffle.

CHEWING IT OVER – There’s a solution out there for people who are obsessed with food and their weight. It’s Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous, or FA, a 12-step program based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday in Hamburg Wesleyan Church, 4999 McKinley Parkway, where members talk about how they’ve overcome food obsessions, overeating, compulsive dieting, undereating and bulimia. SUNDAY DATE – Another dinner-and-a-movie program is planned Sunday by the Williamsville Meeting House Film Committee and the Williamsville Business Association. It begins with the showing of the offbeat 2009 family comedy “City Island,” starring Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies, at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeting House, 5658 Main St., Williamsville. The movie is free, and so is the popcorn.

A LOOK INSIDE – The Buffalo History Museum has scheduled new installments of its popular guided tour of the newly restored Hotel @ the Lafayette.

The tour, led by the museum’s program manager, Tara Lyons, is followed by a discussion over lunch in the hotel’s renovated Pan American Grill and Brewery.
