Call it the modern equivalent of the epistle. Bishop Richard J. Malone of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo plans to blog as many as three times a month to communicate with the area’s more than 600,000 Catholics about matters of faith.

Malone, installed in August as the diocese’s 14th bishop, joined the blogosphere during the Christmas season. Last week, he recommended three new books about the church, Catholic virtues and the new evangelization.

The bishop said he will use the blog to connect with “pew Catholics as well as those who have become inactive in the church and people who are looking for a spiritual home.”
