PHILADELPHIA – Tonight represents the Buffalo Bandits’ second chance at earning their first win of the season.
The Bandits failed to accomplish that goal in their season opener on Friday. They dropped a 13-8 decision to the Philadelphia Wings in the Wells Fargo Center.
The Bandits will play their home opener in the First Niagara Center tonight against the Minnesota Swarm (7:30 p.m., nll.com, Radio 1520 AM).
Buffalo spent too much time in the penalty box in the early going, and it proved costly. With the score tied, 2-2, late in the first period, the Wings went on a 5-0 run. Four of those goals came on the power play, as the Bandits’ Jimmy Purves and Mark Steinhuis both earned major penalties along the way.
That burst essentially was the game. The Bandits never moved closer than three goals the rest of the way.
Ex-Bandit Kevin Buchanan looked like he has found a new home in Philadelphia. He had three goals and three assist for the Wings, while Kevin Crowley had four goals.
Buffalo’s new faces contributed to the team’s offense. Aaron Wilson was the only Bandit to score two goals in the game. David Brock, Shawn Williams, Dhane Smith, John Tavares, Luke Wiles and Tracey Kelusky also scored.
Anthony Cosmo didn’t get much help in goal for Buffalo. He faced 39 shots in 25 minutes and allowed eight goals. Newcomer Kurt Wagar came on for the rest of the game. Cosmo figures to get the start tonight.
Bandits’ defender Billy Dee Smith will sit out tonight’s game. He is serving a two-game suspension for an action in last May’s playoff loss to the Toronto Rock.
