A draft environmental impact statement for a project to replace the Portageville Bridge in Letchworth State Park is available for public review.

The Portageville Bridge Replacement Project would modernize the rail line and allow the Norfolk Southern railroad to move moere quickly across the Genesee River on a new, $69 million bridge just south of the existing structure.

The existing bridge, built in 1875 and on the National Historic Register, could be preserved or demolished, and the state Department of Transportation is soliciting comments about its fate.

The environmental statement is available for review at www.dot.ny.gov/portagevillebridge. Hard copies are available at several locations, including Letchworth State Park Visitor’s Center, Carlisle.

Public comments can be made until Feb. 1 at PortagevilleBridge@dot.ny.gov, or by mail to: Raymond F. Hessinger, director of the Freight and Passenger Rail Bureau; state Department of Transportation, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, 12232.
