ALBION – The Albion Police Department this week was granted $10,000 under the state Department of Transportation’s “Safe Routes To School” program.

The money will help the department buy a Driver Speed Feedback Trailer, which warns motorists of the speeds of their vehicles, Chief of Police Roland D. Nenni III said.

Nenni said the device, which under the federally funded program is designed to encourage children to walk or bike to school, must always be located within two miles of any primary or middle school on a public right of way.

The department submitted a request for the device with the support of the Village Board.

Nenni said his department will be working with schoolchildren, their parents and Albion school staff to promote safe walking and biking habits, and to encourage school-bound children to always use posted crosswalks.
