A federal judge has ruled against a mother who sued Erie County over her son’s suicide at the Erie County Holding Center.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh B. Scott ruled that the county was not aware of Adam Murr’s addicton to drugs or his previous suicide attenpts and therefore should not be liable for his death on Dec. 19, 2009.
Murr, 31, was being held on bank robbery charges when he tied his shoelaces to an air vent and hanged himself two days earlier. He was later declared dead at Buffalo General Hospital.
Murr’s suicide – his mother is appealing Scott’s decision to a district court judge – was one of several that prompted a federal investigation of the Holding Center and led to a landmark agreement to improve suicide screening at the downtown jail.
