A Town of Barre man is being held without bail in the Orleans County Jail after he was charged late last month with assaulting a county sheriff’s deputy who responded to a domestic incident.

Charles F. Sheets, 49, was hospitalized when he complained of chest pains after his initial arrest Dec. 28. He is accused of assaulting Orleans Deputy J.J. Cole Dec. 28, after Cole responded to a domestic disturbance call to Sheets’ residence on Angevine Road, deputies said.

Sheets was released from Medina Memorial Hospital five days later, but the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office was not notified. He was arrested Monday at a Livingston County motel where he had been living since leaving the hospital, sheriff’s officials said.

Barre Town Justice John Henderson ordered Sheets jailed without bail after his arraignment on a felony second-degree assault charge. He is scheduled to return to court Jan. 17.

Cole continues to recover at home from the injuries he suffered, deputies said.
