Gun advocates’ plan defies common sense

The NRA’s response to the Newtown elementary school shootings is the National School Shield, its call for permanently placing an armed police officer in every school, restricting the public’s access to schools and having teachers carry firearms.

Millions of ardent Second Amendment advocates, including many letter writers and online commentors here, personally agree with this idea. They argue that their absolutist gun ownership stance is needed in a free society as a bulwark against the encroachment of government power and eventual tyranny, yet they are bluntly advocating that their government become more weaponized and more restricting.

Against such intelligence, the gods themselves fight in vain.
