LEWISTON – The Town Board’s effort to acquire and pave a short section of unfinished Legacy Drive just east of the village line was back to square one after Town Attorney Michael J. Dowd told the Town Board on Monday that the property owners were unable to come to an agreement to transfer the street segment to the town.
The board held a public hearing last June on acquiring the strip of land, but action was delayed because the owner died. Town officials believed they could negotiate with the heirs to purchase it, but Dowd said Monday that negotiations were fruitless. Therefore, a new public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in Town Hall, 1375 Ridge Road, to discuss acquiring the property through public condemnation.
Nearby residents have been pressuring the Town Board for some time to finish construction of Legacy Drive to permit its public use as well as to eliminate what they consider to be blighted property.
In other action, the Town Board completed its reorganization for the coming year, reappointing nearly all of the existing employees without dissent and setting its next meeting for 6 p.m. Jan. 28 in Town Hall.
The Village Board, which also met on Monday, acted on routine items, including setting the new rate for employees’ use of their private vehicles for village business at 56.1 cents a mile, up about 1 cent from last year’s rate. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has recently recalculated the deductible cost of operating an automobile for business.
