With a year of expanded recycling and 10 months of green, wheeled totes under its belt, the Town of Amherst has seen a huge drop in the amount of waste going into landfills.

The total amount of trash going into landfills is down by more than 5,100 tons in 2012 compared with 2011, generating a savings of $84,000 from the budgeted landfill costs, according to the town’s Recycling and Waste Committee. In addition recycling volume is up by over 1,000 tons, creating an additional recycling rebate of $24,000 over what the town originally budgeted.
