THE WEEK’S LIST
The third season of “Downton Abbey” finally hits stateside when it premieres at 9 p.m. Sunday on PBS. The drama has a rich cast of complex characters, yet the show’s real rock star is Dame Maggie Smith in her Emmy-winning role as Lady Violet, the Dowager Countess. Even beneath all that refinement, she’s a hoot. Here’s a few of her best zingers:
• “First electricity, now telephones. Sometimes I feel as if I were living in an H.G. Wells novel.”
• “Don’t be defeatist, dear. It’s very middle class.”
• “We can’t have him assassinated. I suppose.”
• “No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house … especially somebody they didn’t even know.”
• “Well, give him a date for when Mary’s out of mourning. No one wants to kiss a girl in black.”
• Richard: “I’ll be leaving in the morning, Lady Grantham, I doubt it we’ll meet again.” Violet: “Do you promise?”
• Mrs. Crawley: “I’ll take that as a compliment.” Violet: “Oh, I must have said it wrong.”
