Edward T. Laettner of Hamburg, a retired music teacher and band director in the Cheektowaga-Sloan School District, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital. He was 88.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Laettner was a 1948 graduate of Fredonia State Teachers College and began his teaching career in Harrison, Neb. He also worked at schools in Maynard, Iowa, and Fresno, Calif., until 1962, when he returned to this area.

In the Cheektowaga-Sloan district, Mr. Laettner worked at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School and later at John F. Kennedy High School, where the yearbook was dedicated to him upon his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Laettner’s interests included fishing and boating, and giving music lessons to his nieces and nephews. He played many instruments, including the piano and trumpet.

His former wife, the former Ila Mae Williams, died in 2005.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise; two sons, Donald and John T.; two brothers, Frank and Anthony; and a sister, Rita Doherty.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today in St. Clare Catholic Church, 193 Elk St.
