Norman E. Conway of Cheektowaga, a retired teacher and coach, died Tuesday in Autumn View Health Care Facility in Hamburg. He was 88.

A native of Worcester, Mass., Mr. Conway was an Army paratroop captain in World War II. He made combat parachute jumps with the 11th Airborne Division on Corregidor, Los Banos interment camp for American prisoners of war on Luzon, and on Lae, New Guinea.

He attended Canisius College on a football scholarship and, upon graduation, became a youth counselor, physical director and work secretary at the Buffalo YMCA. He was assigned as physical director and boys work secretary at the Humboldt Branch YMCA.

Mr. Conway taught English at Maryvale High School from 1956 to 1989. During that time, he coached the swim team and worked at the Maryvale Teen Center.

He was a handball champion at the Buffalo Jewish Center and enjoyed playing cards and vacationing at Canandaigua Lake.

His wife of 58 years, Meta Mae Zollitsch Conway, died in 2007.

Survivors include five daughters, Norma Joy, Nancy Sojka, Betty Ingram, Amy Decker and Mickey Klostermann; and three sons, Edward, Steven and Michael.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5480 Main St., Williamsville.
