Register all weapons in national database

I am extremely pleased to have read the letter equating gun ownership with car ownership. All 50 states require all vehicle purchases, including private sales, to be registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Guns should also be registered on the same basis.

I am a retired U.S. Customs inspector. Vehicle ownership information is available to law enforcement agencies nationwide through a computer database called NLETS. Currently, law enforcement has greater capabilities to determine if a car is stolen than if a gun is stolen, due to NLETS. Gun owners should receive the same protection against thieves as car owners. The federal government should set up a computer database of guns owned in the United States to deter theft.
