DELEVAN – George R. “Jim” Kester, longtime farmer, Town of Yorkshire official and World War II Army veteran, died Saturday in Ballston Spa after a long illness. He was 86.

Born in Orchard Park, he was a graduate of Orchard Park High School.

During the war, Mr. Kester was stationed in India and also served as an honor guard during the funeral procession for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He was a member of the China-Burma-India Theater Veterans Association and a life member of both Hendershott-Manness Post 374, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Post 1460, American Legion.

Mr. Kester owned and operated the Shady Edge dairy farm in the Delevan area for 23 years and also worked in shipping and handling for Motorola Inc. in East Aurora from 1969 to 1988.

He served as Yorkshire town justice from 1965 to 1985 and also as town assessor.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Lillian Stroup; two daughters, Jill A. Bednarek and Jane E. Bailey; two sisters, Marjorie Szulewski and Mary Ellen Lewis; and two brothers, Robert and Dale.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 in Arcade United Methodist Church, 212 Main St.
