A Buffalo man was charged with assault and other counts after police stopped him from assaulting a woman with a pocket knife during an early morning incident at Doat and Genesee streets over the weekend, Buffalo police reported Wednesday.

Gary L. Heard, 20, was arrested after Officer Adam O’Shei and other officers confronted him about 3 a.m. Sunday, when police were called to the scene of a possible stabbing and after Heard allegedly repeatedly struck a woman on the head during an argument at the street corner.

Heard was arrested at Genesee and Koons streets after a short foot race and brought back to the scene of the incident for identification by witnesses. The victim was treated in Erie County Medical Center for head lacerations, police said.

Heard was charged with second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing governmental administration.
