OP wins CBA Albany hockey tourney

A little holiday getaway enabled the Orchard Park hockey team to end 2012 with a bang.

The Quakers defeated Ithaca, 4-1, on Sunday to capture the championship of the CBA Albany Brothers Tournament. The win over the Little Red followed Saturday’s 5-2 triumph over host Christian Brothers Academy, which entered the tournament with just two losses.

Tournament MVP Ryan Cox had two assists Sunday for OP and finished the event with four points. T.J. Maloney, Tristan Lukowski, John Januszkiewicz and Ryan Maccarrick scored for Orchard Park (4-3), which limited Ithaca — winner of five state championships and 10 Section III titles — to just nine shots.

“We’ve been playing better every game and that’s our goal,” Quakers coach Derek Gilham said. “We had a chance to get away. To beat the host team and then to beat a team in Ithaca which only had one loss is a good step for us.”

OP plays Ken West at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holiday.

In a nonleague game between large- and small-school members of the WNY Federation, defending large school champion Niagara-Wheatfield beat Grand Island, 6-3, as Justin Durkee scored twice.
