A 45-year-old man was shot early Saturday morning while riding a bicycle in the city’s University District, Buffalo police said.

The shooting occurred at about 5:44 a.m. on East Amherst Street, near Comstock Avenue.

The bicyclist, Thomas Wojcik, was approached by a man on foot, who displayed a handgun then shot Wojcik three times in his torso area, according to police. The gunman ran away.

Wojcik continued to ride his bike to the firehouse at Bailey and Hewitt avenues, where he was stabilized by firefighters from Engine 23, police said. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition late Saturday.
