Will East stops Park

Williamsville East started slowly against Park but soon found its tempo, which continued throughout the contest.

After scoring just eight points in the first quarter, the Flames scored 23 in the second and went on to beat the Pioneers, 70-62, in a first-round matchup of the Five Guys Holiday Tournament.

“It was a grind it out kind of win, a slug fest back and forth,” Williamsville East coach Mike Trzybinski said. “We really got it going in the second quarter with cutting, screening and passing and the kids were able to pull it out.”

Zachary Bischel scored a game-high 22 points for the Flames while Cort Williams finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Bischel also handed out five assists.

In the second game, host Williamsville North received a big game from do-everything guard Sterling Taplin, who scored 22 points in a 68-53 triumph over Holland.

OP athletes sign

Three Orchard Park athletes have earned the Division I dream.

Maryellen Devic of Orchard Park has signed a partial athletic scholarship to play volleyball at the College of St. Rose in Albany.

This past fall the senior middle hitter was named second team All-New York State in Class AA. She’s also a two-time MVP of her team, leading the Quakers to back-to-back Section VI Class AA titles.

The last two years, she has led the team in blocks, digs, aces and hitting percentage. She had an impressive hitting percentage of .409 in 2012.

In the classroom she has maintained a 3.8 grade point average since the eighth grade and was recently inducted to the National Honor Society.

Meanwhile, the Quakers’ Austin Goltz and Mitch Wilson signed their letters of intent to play college lacrosse.

Goltz will attend Providence while Wilson will attend Virginia Military Institute.
