Buffalo Sabres prospect Jake McCabe has been named the captain of the United States team that will be playing in the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia, starting later this week.

McCabe was picked in the second round of the 2012 by the Sabres. The defenseman plays college hockey for the University of Wisconsin.

The U.S. team is seeking to win its third medal in the last four years in the international competition. Team USA finished first in 2010 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was third in 2011 in Buffalo.

The Americans will play their first game of the tournament on Thursday against Germany. The game will start at 9 a.m. EST, and will be shown on the NHL Network.

Former Sabre Phil Housley is the head coach of the U.S. team. He currently serves as the head coach of boys hockey at Stillwater (Minn.) High School.
