HINSDALE – Phyllis A. Schibler, of Hinsdale, a teacher in Buffalo-area schools, food service worker and community volunteer, died Dec. 14 in Olean following a lengthy illness. She was 81.
Born in Buffalo, Ms. Schibler graduated from St. Agnes School in Buffalo and the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Eggertsville. She attended Bryant & Stratton Business School and the University of Buffalo.
Ms. Schibler began her teaching career at St. James School in Buffalo and St. Mary’s on the Hill School in Lancaster, then went on to teach physical education at St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster, where she managed the school cafeteria for several years.
After teaching, she worked in food service at the Lancaster Country Club, Buffalo Yacht Club and Bartlett Country Club in Olean. After 38 years in food service, she went to work in collections for CUTCO Corp. in Olean, retiring in 1996.
Ms. Schibler was an active member and officer of the CUTCO Retirees Club. She also volunteered with the Mental Health Association and Interfaith Caregivers. She was instrumental in organizing Hinsdale Heritage Days and initiated the Trunk & Tree Party for residents of Hinsdale.
Ms. Schibler was a parishioner and bookkeeper of the former St. Helen’s Parish, Hinsdale, and served as president of Guys and Gals of Hinsdale. She also was an officer of the New York State Club Managers Association.
Survivors include a brother, David.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John’s Catholic Church, 931 N. Union St., Olean.
